Public Transport Rules in Every Country
How to get around using trains, buses, and metro systems.
Japan
Asia
Buy a Suica or Pasmo IC card at any major station. It works on all trains, subways, and most buses nationwide.
WarningโSome rural buses and regional lines only accept cash. Always carry some yen as backup.
UAE
Middle East
Dubai has an excellent metro and buses. Buy a Nol Card for all public transport in Dubai. Abu Dhabi has buses but no metro yet.
WarningโPublic displays of affection on public transport can result in fines or arrest. Maintain respectful behavior on all public transit.
Thailand
Asia
Bangkok has BTS Skytrain and MRT subway. Buy a Rabbit Card for BTS. Tuk-tuks and motorbike taxis are everywhere. Agree on price before boarding.
WarningโTuk-tuk drivers in tourist areas sometimes take you to jewelry stores or shops for commissions โ they may claim your destination is 'closed today'. It is a scam. Stay firm on your destination.
Germany
Europe
Germany has excellent trains, trams, and buses. Buy a day pass (Tageskarte) for city travel. Deutsche Bahn runs intercity trains โ book in advance for discounts.
WarningโFare dodging (Schwarzfahren) is taken seriously โ inspectors check regularly. A first offense results in a โฌ60 fine. Always have a valid ticket.
UK
Europe
Use contactless card or Apple/Google Pay on London's Tube and buses โ no need for an Oyster card. Outside London, trains are expensive; book far in advance.
WarningโWalk-up train fares in the UK are among the most expensive in Europe. Always book in advance for long-distance trips โ same-day tickets can cost 3โ5x more.
France
Europe
Paris has an excellent Metro. Buy a carnet (book of 10 tickets) or a Navigo Easy card. SNCF runs intercity trains โ book TGV early for big discounts.
WarningโAlways validate (stamp/tap) your ticket before boarding any transport in France. Fines for untamped tickets apply even if you have a valid ticket that you simply forgot to validate.
Australia
Oceania
Each city has its own transport card. Sydney uses Opal, Melbourne uses Myki, Brisbane uses Go Card. Get the local card as soon as you arrive.
WarningโAustralia's cities are very spread out. Public transport works well for city centers but not for reaching beaches, national parks, or suburbs. A hire car is often essential.
Singapore
Asia
Singapore has an excellent, clean MRT and bus network. Use an EZ-Link card or tap with your contactless bank card. Public transport is cheap and air-conditioned.
NormalItaly
Europe
Italian cities have buses and trams. Rome and Milan have metros. Validate your ticket immediately โ inspectors are frequent and fines are โฌ100+.
WarningโRiding without a validated ticket in Italy results in fines of โฌ100+ on the spot. This applies even if you have a valid ticket that you simply forgot to stamp.
Turkey
Europe/Asia
Istanbul has metro, tram, funicular, and ferries. Use an Istanbulkart. Other cities have buses and minibuses (dolmuล). Agree on taxi fares in advance.
WarningโTaxi scams targeting tourists are common in Istanbul tourist areas. Always insist on the meter (taksimetre) or agree on a specific price before getting in.
Mexico
Americas
Mexico City Metro costs around 5 pesos; use Uber instead of street taxis for safety, and colectivos for inter-town travel.
WarningโHailing street taxis in Mexico City and other large cities carries a documented risk of express kidnapping. Always use app-based rideshare services.
Spain
Europe
Madrid and Barcelona have excellent, affordable metro systems; use the Renfe app to book intercity trains and buy tickets in advance for the best fares.
NormalBrazil
Americas
Uber and local app 99 are the safest and most practical options for tourists; Sรฃo Paulo and Rio have metro systems, while city buses are cheap but difficult to navigate.
WarningโAvoid city buses in Rio de Janeiro and Sรฃo Paulo if you are carrying valuables โ pickpocketing and robbery on buses are common, particularly at night.
India
Asia
Use Ola or Uber in cities for safe, metered rides, and book train tickets well in advance via IRCTC โ Tatkal quota helps for last-minute travel.
WarningโUnofficial taxis at airports and stations frequently overcharge tourists. Use only prepaid taxi booths inside the terminal or app-based rides.
China
Asia
China has a world-class high-speed rail network and extensive city metros โ use the 12306.cn app or Trip.com to book trains.
WarningโDuring Golden Week (October 1โ7) and Chinese New Year / Spring Festival, trains and transport are extremely congested and tickets sell out weeks in advance โ plan and book well ahead.
South Korea
Asia
South Korea has world-class public transport โ the T-money card works on all Seoul Metro lines, city buses, and taxis nationwide.
NormalVietnam
Asia
Grab (motorbike or car) dominates city transport, while cheap buses, the scenic Reunification Express train, and budget airlines connect cities.
WarningโAvoid unmarked or unlicensed taxis at airports โ stick to Grab, Vinasun, or Mai Linh branded vehicles to avoid meter tampering scams.
Greece
Europe
Athens has an excellent metro, and ferries are the main way to travel between the islands.
WarningโFerry schedules on smaller islands can be disrupted by the meltemi wind in August โ always allow a buffer day before an important flight.
Portugal
Europe
Lisbon and Porto have good metro networks, and intercity trains and buses connect the country efficiently.
WarningโTram 28 in Lisbon is a prime pickpocket location โ keep bags in front of you and secure all valuables before boarding.
Netherlands
Europe
The Netherlands has an excellent public transport network using the OV-chipkaart, covering all trains, trams, buses, and metros nationwide.
WarningโAlways tap out when leaving any train, tram, or bus โ forgetting to check out will charge you the maximum fare for that line.
Canada
Americas
Each major city has its own transit system and card โ Toronto uses PRESTO, Vancouver uses Compass, and Montreal uses STM cards.
NormalIndonesia
Asia
Gojek and Grab (motorbike or car) are essential apps; Jakarta has TransJakarta BRT and a commuter rail network; Java has excellent intercity trains; Bali has no reliable public transport.
WarningโNever use unmarked or unlicensed taxis, especially at airports. In Bali, local taxi cartels have historically conflicted with Gojek/Grab drivers โ be discreet when using ride-hailing apps in some areas.
Malaysia
Asia
Kuala Lumpur has an extensive LRT, MRT, Monorail, and KTM rail network โ all covered by the Touch 'n Go card โ and Grab is the dominant, safest rideshare app.
NormalEgypt
Middle East
Use the Cairo Metro for cheap city travel, and Uber or Careem for safe, fairly-priced taxis.
WarningโLocal Cairo taxis without meters will often quote wildly inflated fares to tourists โ always use a ride-hailing app or agree on the price firmly before getting in.
Morocco
Middle East
ONCF trains connect major cities reliably, while petit taxis serve city travel and CTM buses cover intercity routes not on the rail network.
WarningโUnofficial 'faux guides' at train stations and bus stops will offer to help you find accommodation or transport for a fee โ politely decline and use pre-arranged transport from your riad.
Saudi Arabia
Middle East
Riyadh has a modern 6-line metro (opened 2024), Uber and Careem operate widely, and the Haramain High Speed Railway connects Jeddah and Mecca.
WarningโNon-Muslims attempting to enter Mecca or Medina face serious legal consequences. The restriction is enforced by physical checkpoints on all approach roads.

Middle East
Doha has a modern, clean metro with three lines (Gold, Red, Green) that connects major attractions and Hamad International Airport.
NormalSouth Africa
Africa & Oceania
Use Uber or Bolt for safe city travel; the Gautrain is excellent for Johannesburg and Pretoria; avoid minibus taxis entirely as a tourist.
WarningโMetered taxis hailed on the street in Johannesburg and Cape Town can overcharge tourists significantly โ always use Uber or Bolt with upfront pricing instead.
New Zealand
Africa & Oceania
A rental car is almost essential for most New Zealand itineraries โ intercity public transport is limited to buses and domestic flights.
WarningโPublic transport outside Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch is very limited. Without a rental car, many of New Zealand's most famous sights (Milford Sound, Abel Tasman, Coromandel) are difficult or impossible to reach independently.
Philippines
Asia
Grab is the safest and easiest option in cities; jeepneys and tricycles cover local routes while domestic flights and ferries connect the islands.
WarningโJeepney and tricycle routes are confusing for first-time visitors; always confirm the destination with the driver before boarding and agree on the fare for tricycles.
Argentina

Colombia
Americas
Colombia has excellent urban transit including Bogotรก's TransMilenio BRT and Medellรญn's Metro with cable cars, plus intercity buses and affordable domestic flights.
WarningโNever hail a street taxi in Colombia, especially in Bogotรก โ always book through apps like Uber, InDriver, or Cabify to avoid the very real risk of 'paseo millonario' (kidnapping via fake or unofficial taxis).
Costa Rica
Americas
Costa Rica has no national rail system; intercity buses are the cheapest option, while shared tourist shuttles and domestic flights connect remote destinations.
WarningโMany rural roads are unpaved, flooded in rainy season, or require river crossings โ a standard sedan can leave you stranded.
Peru
Americas
Lima has the Metropolitano BRT and Uber/InDriver for safer city travel, while intercity travel relies on reputable bus companies and pre-booked trains to Machu Picchu.
WarningโNever board unofficial minibuses (combis) in Lima as a tourist โ pickpocketing and robbery are common on these routes.

Hungary
Europe
Budapest has an extensive BKK network of metro, trams, and buses; validate your ticket before boarding or face on-the-spot fines from plain-clothes inspectors.
WarningโTram lines 4 and 6 are heavily targeted by pickpockets during peak hours โ keep bags in front of your body and be alert in crowded carriages.
Jordan
Middle East

WarningโTaxis outside Amman rarely use meters โ always agree a firm price before getting in or you risk a significant dispute at your destination.
Sri Lanka
Asia
PickMe and Uber work in Colombo; tuk-tuks are everywhere; trains are iconic and scenic; buses are cheap but very crowded.
WarningโTuk-tuk drivers who don't use an app will almost always quote inflated fares to tourists. Always agree on the price before boarding and consider using PickMe whenever possible.
Nepal

NormalMaldives
Africa & Oceania

WarningโSeaplanes cannot operate after dark, so late-arriving flights can strand you overnight in Malรฉ โ always build in a buffer or book a Malรฉ hotel for late arrivals.
Kenya
Africa & Oceania
There is no reliable tourist-friendly public transport; use Uber or Little Cab in Nairobi, hotel taxis elsewhere, and internal flights for national parks.
WarningโMatatus (minibuses) are extremely dangerous by any road safety standard โ Kenya has very high traffic accident rates and matatus are disproportionately involved. Never use them as a tourist alternative to save money.
Tanzania
Africa & Oceania
There is no practical public transport network for tourists; domestic flights are the most efficient way to reach national parks, with taxis and bajaj for city travel.
WarningโBudget safari operators sometimes use poorly maintained vehicles โ always verify the condition of the safari 4WD before departing Arusha.
United States
Americas
The US has no national public transport network โ outside of a handful of major cities, a rental car is essential for getting around.
WarningโRenting a car is almost always required outside of major cities โ attempting to explore national parks or suburban areas without one will severely limit your trip.
