Driving Rules Rules in Every Country
Can I use my home driving license? Which side of the road?
Japan
Asia
Drive on the left. An International Driving Permit (IDP) plus your original license is required. Traffic laws are strictly enforced.
Warning⛔Driving in central Tokyo and Osaka is strongly discouraged — parking is extremely expensive, one-way systems are complex, and public transport is far faster.
UAE
Middle East
Drive on the right, roads are excellent, but speed cameras are everywhere and the UAE has one of the world's highest road accident rates.
Warning⛔The UAE has a very high road accident and fatality rate. Drive defensively, maintain safe following distances, and strictly observe speed limits.
Thailand
Asia
Thailand drives on the left; an international driving licence is required, but scooter rental is common and accident rates among tourists are very high — always wear a helmet.
Warning⛔Many travel insurance policies are voided if you ride a motorbike without a valid licence or without wearing a helmet. Check your policy carefully before renting any motorised vehicle.
Germany
Europe
Drive on the right; parts of the Autobahn have no speed limit, but strict enforcement applies everywhere else and drink-driving laws are among Europe's toughest.
Warning⛔Germany has zero tolerance for drink driving for new drivers and under-21s (0.00% BAC). For all other drivers, the 0.05% limit is strictly enforced with heavy fines and licence suspension.
UK
Europe
Drive on the left; speed is in mph not km/h; central London has a daily congestion charge; and motorway etiquette requires keeping left except when overtaking.
Warning⛔There is no right turn on red in the UK. Speed cameras are widespread on all road types and fines are issued automatically by post — speeding is enforced very effectively.
France
Europe
Drive on the right, blood alcohol limit is 0.05%, speed cameras are extremely common, and toll roads (autoroutes) are fast but expensive.
Warning⛔France has a strict 0.05% BAC drink-drive limit and roadside breathalyser checks are common near weekends and events — even two glasses of wine can put you over the limit.
Australia
Oceania
Drive on the left; speed cameras are everywhere; the BAC limit is 0.05%; and kangaroos on roads at dawn and dusk are a serious hazard.
Warning⛔Outback driving without sufficient water, food, and a communication device is life-threatening. Carry a minimum of 5 litres of water per person per day and a satellite communicator on any remote route.
Singapore
Asia
Singapore drives on the left, has strict speed enforcement and ERP toll charges for the CBD, but most visitors are better served by MRT and Grab than by renting a car.
Warning⛔The ERP toll system and parking fees in Singapore's CBD can add significant unexpected costs to driving. Ensure any rental car includes a functioning IU unit for ERP charges.
Italy
Europe
Drive on the right; ZTL restricted traffic zones in historic city centres are camera-enforced and generate automatic fines for foreign plates weeks after the visit.
Warning⛔ZTL camera fines for driving in restricted historic centres are sent to foreign tourists' home addresses weeks after the trip, often via rental car companies who add an admin fee on top. Check ZTL maps carefully before driving into any Italian city centre.
Turkey
Europe/Asia
Turkey drives on the right — international driving licenses are valid, but driving in Istanbul is extremely stressful and is not recommended for tourists.
Warning⛔Turkey has one of the higher road accident rates in Europe. Drive defensively, be cautious of aggressive local driving styles, and avoid night driving on mountain or rural roads.
Mexico
Americas
Drive on the right; watch for unmarked topes (speed bumps) everywhere, and avoid driving between cities at night.
Warning⛔Night driving between Mexican cities carries genuine safety risks including unmarked hazards and security concerns in some regions. Strongly avoid inter-city driving after dark.
Spain
Europe
Drive on the right, carry your driving licence and passport at all times, and be aware that many major motorways (autopistas) charge tolls.
Warning⛔Driving under the influence is heavily policed in Spain — random breathalyser checkpoints are common, particularly on holiday weekends.
Brazil
Americas
Drive on the right, an international driving license is valid, but avoid driving at night in unfamiliar areas and be prepared for chaotic urban traffic and highly variable road conditions.
Warning⛔Never drive at night on isolated highways or in unfamiliar rural areas of Brazil — the risk of vehicle robbery, cattle on roads, and poor road conditions make night driving genuinely dangerous outside well-traveled routes.
India
Asia
India drives on the LEFT, roads are chaotic and conditions vary dramatically — hiring a local driver is strongly recommended over self-driving for most tourists.
Warning⛔India has one of the world's highest road accident death tolls. Night driving on non-highway roads is particularly dangerous due to unlit vehicles, animals, and poor road surfaces.
China
Asia
Foreign driving licenses are not valid in China and tourist car rental is nearly impossible — use Didi or hire a driver instead.
Warning⛔Attempting to drive in China on a foreign license is illegal and will invalidate any travel or vehicle insurance — do not attempt to rent or drive a vehicle without a valid Chinese driving permit.
South Korea
Asia
South Korea drives on the right side, an International Driving Permit is required, and Kakao Maps is far more accurate than Google Maps for navigation.
Warning⛔Speed cameras are pervasive across Korean highways and urban roads; strictly observe posted speed limits as fines are issued automatically and can be charged to your rental car company.
Vietnam
Asia
Vietnam drives on the right, traffic is chaotic and motorbike-dominated, and crossing the road safely requires a slow, steady pace — never run.
Warning⛔Vietnam has a high road accident rate — motorbike rental without experience and proper protective gear carries a serious injury risk.
Greece
Europe
Drive on the right; EU, US, and UK licences are valid; island roads are narrow and winding, and ATV rentals carry significant injury risk.
Warning⛔ATV and quad bike accidents are the leading cause of serious tourist injuries in Greece; many rental companies have minimal safety standards — consider a small hire car instead.
Portugal
Europe
Drive on the right, and be aware that most motorways use electronic Via Verde tolls that require a transponder or pre-registration.
Warning⛔Driving on the A22 Algarve motorway and other electronic-toll-only roads without a transponder or subsequent online payment will result in fines.
Netherlands
Europe
Drive on the right, respect strict bike lane rules, and be aware that parking in Amsterdam is extremely limited and expensive.
Warning⛔Never drive, stop, or park in a designated bicycle lane in the Netherlands — cyclists have strict legal priority and violations result in fines; more importantly, it is genuinely dangerous.
Canada
Americas
Drive on the right, use metric speed limits in km/h, and know that winter tires are mandatory in Quebec from December to March.
Warning⛔Moose and other wildlife collisions are a leading cause of road fatalities in Canada. Reduce speed significantly on forested rural highways, particularly at night.
Indonesia
Asia
Indonesians drive on the left; scooter and motorbike rental is common in Bali but the tourist accident rate is very high; an international driving licence is required; avoid driving at night.
Warning⛔Motorbike accidents are the leading cause of tourist deaths and serious injuries in Bali. Many travel insurance policies exclude motorbike accidents if you did not hold a valid motorcycle licence at home — check your policy before renting.
Malaysia
Asia
Malaysia drives on the left like the UK, toll highways use Touch 'n Go card, and Waze is essential for navigating KL's heavily congested roads.
NormalEgypt
Middle East
Driving in Cairo is extremely chaotic and not recommended for tourists — use Uber or Careem instead.
Warning⛔Driving in Cairo without local experience is genuinely hazardous. The combination of extreme traffic density, informal driving norms, and limited road markings has resulted in serious accidents for inexperienced visitors.
Morocco
Middle East
Drive on the right; an international driving permit is recommended, and be prepared for chaotic city driving and variable road conditions outside major routes.
Warning⛔Night driving on rural roads and mountain passes in Morocco is genuinely dangerous due to unlit roads, livestock on carriageways, and minimal road markings — avoid it where possible.
Saudi Arabia
Middle East
Drive on the right; women have been allowed to drive since 2018; speed cameras are everywhere; Riyadh traffic is very heavy.
Warning⛔Driving under the influence of alcohol carries zero tolerance in Saudi Arabia — this is both illegal and violates the total alcohol ban. Penalties include imprisonment and deportation.
Qatar
Middle East
Drive on the right; an international driving license is valid; traffic in Doha is heavy with speed cameras everywhere, but petrol is extremely cheap.
Warning⛔Qatar has zero tolerance for drink-driving — even a trace of alcohol in your system while driving is a criminal offense carrying fines, imprisonment, and deportation.
South Africa
Africa & Oceania
Drive on the LEFT; highways are generally good quality; keep doors locked in cities; do not stop on roadsides at night.
Warning⛔South Africa has one of the world's highest road fatality rates. Do not drive at night outside cities if possible, especially on unfamiliar rural roads. Cattle and wildlife on roads, combined with potholes and erratic driving, make night driving genuinely dangerous.
New Zealand
Africa & Oceania
Drive on the LEFT; roads are often narrow and winding; speed limits are strictly enforced; a rental car is essential for most itineraries.
Warning⛔New Zealand has a disproportionately high road fatality rate, with overseas tourists over-represented in crash statistics. Jet lag, unfamiliar left-hand driving, and scenic distractions are major factors — drive slowly and take regular breaks.
Philippines
Asia
Driving is on the right side; an international driving licence is valid, but Metro Manila traffic is among the world's worst and Grab is far more practical.
Warning⛔Many travel insurance policies exclude motorbike accidents if you do not hold a valid motorbike licence. Check your policy before renting any two-wheeled vehicle.
Argentina
Americas
Drive on the right; an international driving licence is valid; fill up whenever you can in Patagonia where petrol stations are sparse.
Warning⛔On Patagonian gravel roads, loose stones thrown by passing vehicles can crack windscreens — maintain a large following distance and check whether your rental insurance covers windscreen damage.
Colombia
Americas
Colombians drive on the right; an international driving license is valid, but avoid driving at night in rural areas and never stop for unknown roadblocks.
Warning⛔Never drive in rural Colombia after dark — poor road conditions, limited lighting, and the risk of criminal activity make nighttime rural driving genuinely dangerous.
Costa Rica
Americas
Drive on the right side; a 4WD vehicle is strongly recommended as many rural roads are unpaved, unsigned, and may require river crossings.
Warning⛔Never attempt a river crossing (vado) if you cannot see the bottom or if water is moving fast — vehicles are swept away every rainy season.
Peru
Americas
Drive on the right, an international driving licence is valid, but roads in the Andes can be extremely dangerous and driving in Lima is chaotic and not recommended for tourists.
Warning⛔Andean mountain roads regularly see fatal accidents — they are narrow, frequently lack guardrails, and conditions deteriorate sharply in rain; exercise extreme caution or hire a local driver.
Switzerland
Europe
You must purchase a motorway vignette sticker (CHF 40) to drive on Swiss highways — driving without one risks a heavy fine, and mountain roads require snow chains in winter.
Warning⛔Driving on Swiss motorways without the valid annual vignette (CHF 40) is illegal and results in an immediate fine. The vignette must be stuck to the inside of the windscreen — hanging it from the mirror is not valid.
Austria
Europe
Drive on the right; an Autobahn vignette is required for motorways (€10.90 for 10 days); speed limits are strictly enforced.
Warning⛔Driving on the Autobahn without a valid vignette sticker results in a fine of several hundred euros — purchase before you enter any motorway.
Czech Republic
Europe
Drive on the right; Czech Republic enforces zero-tolerance drink-driving (0.00% BAC) and requires a motorway vignette sticker.
Warning⛔Zero-tolerance drink-driving (0.00% BAC) is strictly enforced — do not drive after any alcohol, including a single beer.
Poland
Europe
Drive on the right; Poland has zero tolerance for drink driving (0.02% BAC); speed cameras are widespread and speed limits are strictly enforced.
Warning⛔Poland's drink driving limit is 0.02% BAC — one standard drink can put you over the limit. Police conduct regular roadside breath tests and penalties include immediate license suspension and criminal charges.
Sweden
Europe
Drive on the right, carry winter tyres from December to March, watch for moose at dawn and dusk, and respect Sweden's near-zero 0.02% BAC drink-drive limit enforced by widespread speed cameras.
Warning⛔Moose on roads are a genuine, serious hazard in Sweden — collisions are frequently fatal. Reduce speed and heighten vigilance on forested roads, particularly at dawn and dusk.
Norway
Europe
Drive on the right; toll roads are widespread with the AutoPASS system; winter tyres are mandatory in snow conditions; and mountain roads rank among the world's most spectacular and technically demanding.
Warning⛔Mountain roads in Norway (Trollstigen, Geiranger, Hardangervidda) are closed in winter and can be dramatic even in summer — check vegvesen.no for road conditions and closures before driving mountain routes.
Croatia
Europe
Drive on the right; the coastal Magistrala road is spectacular but narrow and busy; ferries are required for island hopping with a car.
Warning⛔The coastal road through the Neum corridor in Bosnia and Herzegovina requires your passport and has border crossings that can cause significant delays in summer — factor in extra time.
Hungary
Europe
Drive on the right, purchase a HU-GO motorway vignette before using motorways, and observe the strictly enforced 0.00% BAC drink-drive limit.
Warning⛔Hungary's 0.00% BAC drink-drive law is absolute — even a single beer can put you over the legal limit for driving, and penalties include on-the-spot licence confiscation and criminal charges.
Jordan
Middle East
Jordan drives on the right; an international licence is required, and military checkpoints are frequent — slow down and be polite.
Warning⛔Never photograph military checkpoints or soldiers under any circumstances — cameras must remain completely stowed when approaching and passing through any checkpoint.
Sri Lanka
Asia
Drive on the left; an International Driving Permit is required alongside your home licence; hiring a driver is strongly recommended over self-driving.

Nepal
Asia
Nepal drives on the left and requires an international driving permit, but road conditions outside Kathmandu are poor and hiring a driver is strongly recommended.
Warning⛔Mountain road accidents are a leading cause of tourist fatalities in Nepal; do not underestimate the danger of narrow cliff-edge roads, especially at night or in wet conditions.
Hong Kong
Asia
Hong Kong drives on the left (British legacy) but renting a car is completely impractical — public transport is far superior for tourists.
NormalMaldives
Africa & Oceania
Tourists essentially never need to drive in the Maldives — resorts use golf carts, and all inter-island transport is by boat or seaplane.
NormalKenya
Africa & Oceania
Drive on the LEFT; roads outside Nairobi are often poor; a 4WD is essential for national parks; never drive outside cities at night.
Warning⛔Kenya has very high road traffic fatality rates. Night driving outside major cities is a serious risk due to unlit roads, wandering livestock, pedestrians, and potholes. Arrange to complete all inter-town driving well before dark.
Tanzania
Africa & Oceania
Drive on the left; a 4WD is essential in national parks, night driving outside cities is risky, and self-driving in the Serengeti is technically possible but guided is strongly recommended.
Warning⛔Driving at night outside major Tanzanian cities is genuinely dangerous due to unlighted livestock on roads, broken-down vehicles without lights, and wildlife near park boundaries — avoid it entirely where possible.
United States
Americas
Drive on the right side of the road; an international driving permit plus your home licence is valid in most states; a rental car is essential for exploring beyond major cities.
Warning⛔Distracted driving laws (no hand-held phone use while driving) are enforced in most states and fines are substantial — use hands-free Bluetooth or pull over to use your phone while driving.
