Dress Code Rules in Every Country
What to wear — and what to avoid — in each country.
Japan
Asia
Japan is generally relaxed about clothing, but remove shoes when entering homes and many temples. Dress modestly at religious sites.
Warning⛔Many traditional onsen (hot spring baths) refuse entry to guests with visible tattoos. Check the policy before visiting.
UAE
Middle East
Dress modestly in public. Shoulders and knees should be covered in malls, markets, and public areas. Swimwear is only for beaches and pools.
Warning⛔Wearing bikinis or swimwear off the beach or pool (e.g., walking through a hotel lobby in a bikini) can result in a fine in the UAE.
Thailand
Asia
Cover shoulders and knees at temples. Beachwear stays at the beach. Thai people dress practically — you won't be judged for casual wear in cities.
Warning⛔Wearing revealing clothing at temples is deeply disrespectful to Thai Buddhists. Many temples will refuse entry to tourists dressed inappropriately.
Germany
Europe
Germany is relaxed about clothing. Dress practically. Some clubs and upscale restaurants have dress codes. Churches ask for modest dress.
NormalUK
Europe

Oceania
Very relaxed. Swimwear at beaches is fine. Smart casual for restaurants. No-shirt no-service applies at most shops and restaurants.
CautionSingapore

Singapore is hot and humid — dress light. Modest dress required at temples and mosques. Upscale clubs and restaurants have smart casual dress codes.
NormalItaly
Europe
Modest dress required at churches — cover shoulders and knees. Italians dress well in cities. No beachwear in city streets, especially in smaller towns.
Warning⛔The Vatican enforces its dress code strictly. Guards at St. Peter's Basilica will not allow entry to anyone with bare shoulders or shorts above the knee, regardless of how long you waited in line.
Turkey
Europe/Asia
Dress modestly at mosques — head covering required for women, no shorts. Beach and resort areas are relaxed. Istanbul is cosmopolitan; smaller towns are more conservative.
NormalMexico
Americas
Dress is casual throughout Mexico, but cover shoulders and knees when entering Catholic churches and respect stricter rules in indigenous communities.
Warning⛔In some indigenous communities in Chiapas, breaking local dress or behaviour rules can result in being escorted out or worse. Always seek guidance before entering.
Spain
Europe
Spain is generally relaxed about dress, but cover your shoulders and knees when entering churches or cathedrals, and avoid wearing swimwear away from the beach.
Warning⛔Barcelona actively fines tourists (up to €300) for walking in the city centre in swimwear or going shirtless outside of beach areas.

Brazil is extremely casual in daily life, but beachwear must stay at the beach and religious sites require modest, covered clothing.
NormalIndia

Cover shoulders and knees at all temples and mosques; sarongs are required at Balinese temples and usually provided; bikinis are fine at beaches; dress more conservatively in non-tourist Muslim-majority areas.

Cover shoulders and knees at mosques and temples — beachwear is fine at resort areas but Malaysia is more conservative than Thailand in everyday settings.
CautionEgypt
Middle East
Cover shoulders and knees in most public areas; swimwear is fine at Red Sea and Mediterranean resorts.
