How Does Weather & Best Time Work in Jordan?
Last verified: 2025-06 · Middle East
1The Quick Answer
March–May and October–November are the ideal months — summers are extremely hot at Petra and Wadi Rum, and desert nights are cold year-round.
2What You Need to Know
Jordan's best travel seasons are spring (March to May) and autumn (October to November), when temperatures are pleasant for outdoor sightseeing at Petra and Wadi Rum (20–28°C) and hiking conditions are ideal. Summer (June to September) brings extreme heat — Petra and Wadi Rum regularly exceed 38–40°C, making midday sightseeing dangerous. Aqaba is warm year-round and good for diving in all seasons. The Dead Sea in winter (December to February) is surprisingly pleasant at around 20°C and much less crowded. Wadi Rum nights are cold year-round — temperatures drop sharply after sunset even in summer. Petra can also see brief winter cold snaps and occasional snow in January.
3Practical Tips
Practical Tips
- 1For Petra in summer, arrive at site opening (6am) and leave by 11am — midday in the open desert gorges is dangerously hot and will exhaust you within an hour
- 2October is arguably Jordan's single best travel month — crowds thin out after summer, temperatures are ideal, and the landscape is still dry and golden
- 3Pack warm layers for Wadi Rum camp nights regardless of the season — desert temperatures drop dramatically after sunset and sleeping bags in camps are not always sufficient for cold nights
Important Warning
Heat stroke and severe dehydration are real medical risks at Petra and Wadi Rum in summer — carry significantly more water than you think you need and take midday shade breaks.
