How Does Public Transport Work in Jordan?
Last verified: 2025-06 · Middle East
1The Quick Answer
There is no reliable public transport network for tourists — taxis, Uber in Amman, and JETT buses are the practical options.
2What You Need to Know
Jordan has no tourist-friendly rail network and local bus routes are confusing for visitors. JETT buses connect Amman with Aqaba, Petra (Wadi Musa), and the King Hussein Bridge to Israel — these are comfortable and air-conditioned. Uber operates in Amman and is the easiest way to get around the capital at fair prices. Yellow taxis are available everywhere but must be negotiated or put on the meter before departure. Shared service taxis (called 'service') run fixed routes between cities cheaply. Hiring a car is strongly recommended for independent travellers wishing to explore Jerash, the Dead Sea, Madaba, and Wadi Rum at their own pace.
3Practical Tips
Practical Tips
- 1Book JETT bus tickets for the Amman–Aqaba and Amman–Petra routes in advance, especially in high season (March–May, October–November)
- 2Use Uber in Amman for all city travel — it eliminates fare disputes and drivers know exact locations via GPS
- 3For Wadi Rum, either book a guided 4WD tour through your accommodation or join an organised camp — independent driving in the desert without a local guide is genuinely hazardous
Important Warning
Taxis outside Amman rarely use meters — always agree a firm price before getting in or you risk a significant dispute at your destination.

Dubai has an excellent metro and buses. Buy a Nol Card for all public transport in Dubai. Abu Dhabi has buses but no metro yet.
Use the Cairo Metro for cheap city travel, and Uber or Careem for safe, fairly-priced taxis.
ONCF trains connect major cities reliably, while petit taxis serve city travel and CTM buses cover intercity routes not on the rail network.
