How Does Beach & Swimming Work in Jordan?

Last verified: 2025-06 · Middle East

1The Quick Answer

🚨Warning

Aqaba offers excellent Red Sea snorkelling and diving, while the Dead Sea offers a unique floating experience — but not swimming.

2What You Need to Know

Jordan has two very different aquatic experiences. Aqaba on the Red Sea has excellent coral reefs and warm clear water ideal for snorkelling and diving year-round — the reefs are more intact than in some overrun Red Sea destinations and marine life is diverse. The Dead Sea, at 430 metres below sea level, is the lowest point on Earth: its extreme salinity (ten times saltier than the ocean) makes swimming impossible but floating effortless and memorable. Dead Sea minerals can sting cuts or any broken skin acutely, and getting the water in your eyes causes intense burning — have fresh water on hand at all times. Swim-friendly public beaches in Aqaba are limited but improving.

3Practical Tips

Practical Tips

  1. 1At the Dead Sea, cover any cuts or skin abrasions before entering — the salt concentration will cause significant pain on any broken skin
  2. 2Book a dive trip through one of Aqaba's reputable dive centres for guided reef access — the Japanese Garden reef is considered one of the Red Sea's best accessible dive sites
  3. 3Never put your face in Dead Sea water and keep your hands away from your eyes — have a bottle of fresh water in hand before you enter the water

Important Warning

Getting Dead Sea water in your eyes is extremely painful and requires immediate rinsing with large amounts of fresh water — always have clean water within arm's reach before entering.
