How Does Dress Code Work in Indonesia?

Last verified: 2025-06 · Asia

1The Quick Answer

🚨Warning

Cover shoulders and knees at all temples and mosques; sarongs are required at Balinese temples and usually provided; bikinis are fine at beaches; dress more conservatively in non-tourist Muslim-majority areas.

2What You Need to Know

Indonesia's dress expectations vary widely by location. In Bali, beach attire is perfectly acceptable at beaches and resort areas, but shoulders and knees must be covered when entering any Hindu temple — sarongs and sashes are typically available to borrow at temple entrances. In Java, Lombok, Sumatra, and other predominantly Muslim islands, modest dress (covering shoulders and knees) is expected in towns and villages even outside religious sites. Aceh province enforces strict modest dress requirements. In major tourist areas of Bali such as Seminyak and Kuta, casual Western dress is the norm everywhere except at temples.

3Practical Tips

Practical Tips

  1. 1Always carry a light sarong or scarf — you will need it for spontaneous temple visits and it doubles as beach cover-up
  2. 2Sarongs and sashes are provided free or for a small fee at Balinese temple entrances, but having your own is more hygienic and convenient
  3. 3Outside of Bali beach resort areas, wear shorts that reach at least the knee and a modest top when walking through towns or villages

Important Warning

Entering a Balinese temple without proper covering is deeply disrespectful and you will be denied entry. Menstruating women are traditionally not permitted inside some inner temple areas — signs are usually posted.
